I was watering all my plants the other day. It took me over an hour. Today was the day to clean my house! By the time I watered all my indoor & outdoor plants. I felt overwhelmed with all my “stuff” and decided to do some EMDR (eye movement desensitization & reprocessing).
EMDR is a process I find very effective. When I am feeling overwhelmed, shitty or deflated from my thinking. Anyway, I set up my statements for EMDR which was
“I own too many things!”
To be transformed by EMDR into
“I love & use everything I own!”
As I was processing the first statement. I noticed all sorts of feelings arising! Like sadness, deflation, defeat, anger, nausea, disempowerment, disappointment, shame. Wow, I thought! My possessions shouldn’t make me feel like this.
This then led me to thinking about the word possession. According to dictionary.com, possession means the act of possessing or the state of being possessed. Possessed means to occupy, dominate or control from within.
Mm, well if my possessions are making me feel burdened, disempowered & defeated, were they actually possessing me as opposed to me possessing them? Yes, I think so, considering they deflate my energy!
Yet why do I seem to have such a hard time letting go of things! When I attempt to release some possessions. My mind thinks “that cost such and such, or so and so gave that to me, or I got that on holidays in Tobago, or I might need/use it one day, or it is brand new, but I don’t use it”!
On and on my mind can rattle and rattle me. About why I cannot let go of possessions. That are possessing a piece of my mind and stealing my piece of mind. Seriously is that twenty or fifty-dollar item worth hanging onto, if it drains your energy? Maybe just maybe, you are spending more on massages to release your tight muscles, that unneeded possessions invoke on your physicality!
Could our physical stuff be an analogy for the clutter going on within our minds? How many pies we have our fingers in. The saying less is more may really apply here!
I know for me every time I take a boot load of stuff to the op shop for someone else to enjoy. WOW I feel so light and proud of myself, it actually feels better to let go than hang on. This opens up the space for the new to flow in!
I have some favourite spaces in my house! These spaces actually have space, where there is nothing. They are sparsely decorated and very relaxing to be in! Do you have a corner or room in your house that you just love? What is it about this corner or part of a room that you love? Does it make you feel a certain way, as opposed to the spare room full of junk, or the garage crammed with stuff you never use.
I know for me I would like my whole house to feel like my favourite room. Open, organised, clear and calming. In fact, I would like my whole life to feel like that! Maybe once my home has newly created space. By unshackling from the possessions I no longer need or use. Beautiful new things more relevant to me as a person today can flow in!
Mmm sounds nice!
